Weekly Wrap (29/3)

By: Kieran | March 30th, 2009

First of all, sorry for not posting part 2 of my A League season review, I’ve been down the coast for a field trip for Geography, and up in Sydney for a major rowing regatta (Head of the River, we didn’t come last :) ) So sorry, but moving on…

A quiet week for the A League so far, with no games and only a few transfer rumblings, so I’ll keep it short and sweet, but the big news is…

Adelaide’s in trouble

According to Fox Sports, Adelaide United owners Bianco Constructions are apparently in difficulty, and the FFA may have to take control of the club, after the owners admitted they were looking for a new investor. You really gotta feel sorry for United fans, from ACL runners up to this in only a few months, gotta hurt.

Staying with Adelaide, they are apparently interested in signing Socceroo Richard Garcia from Hull City. Garcia has played a small role in Hull’s premier league run this season, having failed to establish himself as a first team starter this year. This news comes with Reds’ assistant manager Phil Stubbins currently in England on a scouting mission, and he has apparently met with Hull manager Phil Brown multiple times. However, i remain unconvinced, as Hull City are a Premier League team that may well stay up this year, whereas Adelaide are apparently in crisis. And at the end of the day, if Garcia is sitting there going, ‘Hull City, Adelaide, Hull City, Adelaide, Premier League, A League,’ i know where I’d be putting my money.

Trouble is apparently afoot in Perth, with Birmingham City claiming Dave Mitchell has contacted their striker Kevin Phillips. As you may or not know, a club can only approach a player without the club’s permission in the last six months of his contract, and since Phillips still has more than a year on his contract, if this allegation is true, the Glory could be in trouble. However Perth are completely denying it, with Mitchell saying, ”We regret any misunderstanding in this matter and can categorically say that Perth Glory has not made any contact with Kevin Phillips,” so if he’s not lying, they should have nothing to worry about. Nevertheless, Birmingham have asked FIFA to investigate, so we will probably be hearing more about this in the future.

News in Short:

Mariner’s Captain Alex Wilkinson thinks they have self belief

Perth Glory are going to play the Wolverhampton Wanderers in a pre-season friendly later in the year

Melbourne Victory will soon have a home town rival (well Canberra better get a team as well!)

And Roar midfielder Matt McKay is liking China, apparently

So, thanks for reading, any advice is welcomed, as i really want to be putting out quality articles, and stay tuned for part 2 of my A League season review, coming soon….ish

Haha, when someone “categorically” says anything they might as well write “guilty” across their forehead!!

These are ambitious and massive coups by the A-League clubs, cos despite the fact that he’s 35, Phillips is still City’s leading scorer this year, and like you said Garcia’s choice is a no-brainer. That being said, it’s good to see the A-league clubs aiming high. At least now they’re pragmatically going for the Culina’s and Fowler’s and not the Romario’s and Jardel’s. i’d love to see Phillips here, but I reckon Garcia’s got a bit more to offer over in England (whether it’s with Hull or not).

Nice post mate, plenty of useful tid-bits. Keep them coming.

I think it would be stupid to put another team in Melbourne, we have s strong base and i think it would be wise to keep out competition, i think there should be another Victorian side though, maybe in Geelong or something.
Mark my words mate, if the FFA allow South Melbourne in then there will be riots, because they will destroy the league like with what they did with the NSL, there should not be any ethnic teams in the league.
Also check this out Milicevic claims Hajduk are after him, lol seriously hes lucky to have a team in the A-league what makes him think a European team will take him

Cheers for the kind words Pat,

Yer i agree Marcus i think its stupid. For the time being it should be 1 team per city, at least until every major city gets a team, i mean why should Melbourne get 2 when the national capital doesn’t even have 1

Yer i saw that, pretty funny, and he said he wants to move to improve his chances of getting into the World cup team, i mean dream on, he has no chance
