Weekly Wrap (22/6)
By: Kieran | June 21st, 2009Hey everyone, I’m Back!!! I’ve been slugging through exams so as such I haven’t been doing much writing for the blog. But now I’m on holidays, so WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! and yer expect to see some articles coming your way over the next week.
Now before I begin A League news, I just want to start with a WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! We’ve made the World Cup!!! Now moving on:
Glory sign Sterjovski

So.. Sterj is coming home. A-League club Perth Glory have signed Australian winger/deep striker Mile Sterjovski from English Championship Derby County. The thirty year old signed for the club after been frozen out of Derby by manager Nigel Clough. According to SBS, Sterj’s good relationship with Dave Mitchell, who had coached him at NSL clubs Sydney United and Parramatta Power, was key to the deal. Mitchell said at the unveiling in Sydney,
“I’ve known Mile for a long time and also Jacob Burns as well…Two quality guys, good footballers and they’ll certainly help raise the profile of Perth and the standard of football that we’re playing…That’s where we want to be, challenging at the right end and give Perth a chance to make the finals, which we haven’t done for a few years.”
So hopefully this signing will put the Glory up at the top end of the table come the end of the season.
Felipe dumps Fury

Brazilian Felipe has reported turned his back of the North Queensland Fury, signing a contract with a Saudi club, after already signing a contract with the Fury. The Fury will terminate his contract, and then look for a compensation package from the Brazilian’s agent. Apparently Felipe’s agent has asked that the Brazilian midfielder be released from his two year contract so that he can continue to play in Saudi Arabia. This makes him the third player to turn their back on the Fury, so that sucks big time for them.
Melbourne lose Lopez
Now this is a pretty big story, so I would write a bit on it, but luckily for me Marcus has already done it, so check out a Melbourne fans take on it here
Gold Coast star injured
New Gold Coast signing, Brazilian Jefferson, has seriously injured his knee in a freak training accident. According to Fox Sports, he attempted to change direction suddenly during a ball exercise, and collapsed in pain. Smooth. A subsequent MRI scan revealed that Jefferson had suffered a meniscal cartilage tear (sound nasty), an injury likely to keep him out for a while. Gold Coast United Physio, David Battersby, spoke to the media after the incident,
“It was a non-contact twisting injury at training that has resulted in a bucket handle meniscal tear of the cartilage in his left knee. He will consult with a surgeon on Monday to determine his options and the best possible treatment.”
So damm, that sucks for GCU, not a good way to be starting the season.
Finally, although not really A League, I thought I’d talk a bit about Josh ‘Jesus’ Kennedy’s move to Japan. But, whatta ya know, Pat’s already covered it. Aren’t I lucky. But seriously in the next article I’ll give you my opinion on his move, as to be honest I don’t think its the right one.
News in Short:
Gold Coast also unveil new kit
Roar lose to a Japanese youth team
More Socceroos to come home, says Sterjovski
Alright well look out for multiple articles coming in the next week and a bit, before I head off to QLD for some relaxation! Ohh and lastly, if you want a good article to read, check out Jason Dasey’s article on Jets keeper Ben Kennedy
