Round 3 Review: Demolition!

By: Daniel | September 1st, 2008

Round 3 was one of the most goalishious rounds of the A-League… Ever with 13 goals from the 4 games.

But these wernt tight games, like a 4-3 or a 3-2, these were absolute annihilation’s due mainly to defensive displays that make ever lover of the game shudder. But what was good was that there was goals and not fluffed chances, this will only get more and more fringe supporters interested in our great league.

Melbourne Victory 5 v 0 Newcastle Jets
I was at this game and what a game to see. Melbourne were fantastic to watch, The interplay between Hernandez, Lopez, Fabiano, Allsopp and Thompson was something to behold and will scare the living shit out of defenders all season! The Jets were just simply outclassed from start to finish as they were left one too many times in no mans land. Archie Thompson was man of the match here as (first game coming back from injury) he showed that his Olympic woes were behind him by setting up 3 goals and scoring one himself. The Victory Marquee was unselfish first the first time in a long time.

On the other hand the Jets were absolutely woeful. Jade North needs to forget about going overseas once-and-for-all because he got ripped to pieces by the Victory strikers! Zura was nowhere and Covic looked very very unsettled. Song was impressive but besides him they were just pathetic and showed that they are not the same team that one the toilet bowl last season.

Match report
MELBOURNE VICTORY 5 (Carlos Hernandez 40m, Archie Thompson 45+2m, Danny Allsopp 61m, 64m, Grant Brebner 90+2m) NEWCASTLE JETS 0. Crowd: 22,589

Adelaide United 3 v 0 Wellington Phoenix
Adelaide were able to keep up with Melbourne by seeing off Wellington at Hindmarsh Stadium. Brazilian striker Cristiano was the star of the show here as he put away two shots from inside the box. The former Dutch first division player showed class pouncing on ever ball that came his way. United played fantastic overall with Salley improving with every match, Pantelis slotting calmly from the edge of the 16 yard box and Trav Dodd at his usual best. Makes for a fantastic game v Melbourne in 2 weeks.

Wellington on the other hand were poor to say the very least. They seemed to really struggle without the presence of Shane Smeltz and find themselves bottom of the ladder. This team has problems all over the park with their defense conceding eight goals in their first three matches. Ricki Herbet will need to make some drastic changes to get anywhere close to the top 4 this season.

Match Report
ADELAIDE UNITED 3 (Lucas Pantelis 15m, Cristiano 48m, 60m) WELLINGTON PHOENIX 0. Crowd: 7,832.

Sydney FC 5 v 2 Perth Glory
Glory received a nice belting here copping 5 goals. Alex Brosque, Cole and Steve Corica were the performers for Syd. They were a constant threat for the Glory defense all game. Brosque seems like he’s a bit more settled now with Kosmina as coach and the Sydney style of play. Both teams got deserved penalties against them and were fairly even through the first with Amaral and Eugene Dadi the threats coming from Perth. Dadi once again showed his class from headers and looks to be a major coup for the A-League.

So it was all heading towards being a fantastic match… then the controversy happened. Dino Djulbic had a bit of a mind burst and not only caused a penalty but SPAT IN THE DIRECTION OF THE REF! I dont know if he did it on purpose or not but if he did, he should be delt with! HARD! we dont need that crap in the A-League.

And it was downhill for the Glory from there. Defense allowed the Sydney strikers too much space and they were ripped apart accordingly.

Match Report
SYDNEY FC 5 (Alex Brosque 3m, Steve Corica 22m pen, Mark Bridge 39m, Shannon Cole 43m, Nikolai Topor-Stanley 89m og) PERTH GLORY 2 (Eugene Dadi 12m, 67m pen). Crowd: 11,734.

Central Coast Mariners v Queensland Roar 4-2
Another goal feast was found in the last game of the round. that rhymes wtf! anyway, didn’t get a chance to see too much of this game so ill leave it up to the match report to give you guys a bit of an idea about what hapened in this match. But what id like to point out are 4 things.

1. Mile Jedinak’s firebolt of a goal! pwoaahhhhh we need a bit more of that in the A-League.
2. Mark Bosnich made his first official return to football in this clash (a little beefy it must be said) but his passion he has for the game is out there for the world to see. He truely wears his heart to see and its a breath of fresh air in this league. He will hopefully be a great success.
3. Mark should’ve been sent off for taking a players legs out like that… you just dont do it! grr
4. WTF was with Liam Reddy!, hes a fantastic goalkeeper but got it all wrong in that game.

Match Report
CENTRAL COAST MARINERS 4 (Matt Simon 31m, Mile Jedinak 48m, Dylan Macallister 64m, 71m) QUEENSLAND ROAR 2 (Charlie Miller 69m, Serginho van Dijk 73m pen). Crowd: 12,185.

I think it is ridiculous the amount of so called “football” supporters that do not attend A-League games in Australia. And why, “Because it is shit quality”. Oh, and which Socceroos games have you been to, “None”. Oh, so when was the last time you went to watch your beloved European (please note that it will always be Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, MU, Real, Barca, Juve, Milan or Inter. Woah you must really have close ties to your club then. How do you come to follow that club, did you pick a team at the top of their league table the year you decided to follow football? Sorry, rant) club live in action. “Nah I’ve never been to Europe. But I watch them on Fox occasionally”.

These people shit me. Honestly, they don’t know what football is. It’s not the Big Four (soon to be the five). It’s not about trying to be worldly, and showing how European you are. Hell, it’s not even about having the greatest quality strikers, wingers, midfielders and backs playing the most beautiful football ever (although that is nice). It’s about the club, your support. It’s about your support to your local club. Because that (you fucking Euro-snobs who will always live in Australia, deal with it) is the best football you will get, week in, week out

Rory, i know exactly where you are coming from. Unfortunately thats the sentiment of a lot of people who live in Australia. I find it difficult to understand their logic. “its shit quality” but without our continued support for the game in Aus how is it to improve?

I must admit, i do shudder when i saw some of the A-League defenses be ripped apart last week but without our continued support it will continually happen.

These people are used to the quick fix, hence the reason they have chosen the big clubs in Europe to support. They have no idea what it is like to support a Portsmouth or an Everton who have no chance to win the league but fight hard to avoid relegation and win a Euro spot. At times thats what football is all about.

I continue to support the game in Australia because i love football and i would love to see it improve in this country. I dont think that it will be a top league in my lifetime but being able to go to a high quality stadium to watch my team play against an interstate rival is what i love.

We need people to criticize the technical aspect of Aussie football but only constructively. If otherwise i think its best these ignorant people stay at home

Well I’m in a similar-ish situation because I live in Canada. There is no pro league here, so when I started getting to know pro football here, it was with the European clubs and somewhat MLS. But seeing as MLS is “shit quality”, has a tacky-as-hell fixture system, dumb player-movement policies, and oh yeah, is nothing but a fucking joke, I find it extremely hard to take it seriously, even though I wish the north american footie scene would get better.

Plus, I agree 100% that you can’t jump on the bandwagon and declare yourself a ________ fan because they win the champions league, but how do you swear alliegeance to a franchise that won a lottery to serve as an expansion team in the top league? you can’t!

It’s really just frustrating, having to endure the scene in Canada, which is why I myself follow European football. And by the way, I’m a Spurs supporter.

your a spurs supporter so you can never be accused of jumping on the wagon ;)

I frequently podcast worldsoccerdaily so ive pritty much got all the run down bout the “joke” that is MLS and the Beckham fiasco.

Steven on WSD summed it up brilliantly for those interested in wanting to choose a club in any league in the world. Its about watching a game and feeling a certain real emotion inside yourself thats willing that team to win, it could be anything that creates that feeling, a certain style of play, the passion the players have etc. That should be the thing that helps you to choose a team. If that end up being Man utd/chelsea/milan etc then so be it but at least you havnt chosen the team because they’re a part of the big 4.

btw i support Juventus since i was a boy in italy, everton in the epl and Valencia in spain

Well, I have to say I’ve been meaning to drop-by because I don’t miss many of the A-League matches online or in-person when I’m in Melbourne.

Sam - I understand your issue and I’m very annoyed with the situation in Canada however the MLS is not “poor” quality, it is merely going through a transitional period where it doesn’t know whether to reflect international play or utilize regional players. It’s a perplexing problem and one that isn’t easily answered because I appreciate regional club-based teams but many don’t. However as it relates to Canada, not many realize it but with a few changes you could have the top team in CONCACAF but unfortunately many players choose to not play for Canada and select “adopted” nations. It is actually quite foul and it has a long term impact upon the sport development in the country.

However in reading comments, anyone who thinks so badly of the A-League, likely doesn’t know their Football and I doubt they ever stepped on the pitch. It’s an emerging force in the game and the ‘Roos have proven it. I’ve written about the development of the sport in Australia and its on the verge of another breakthrough in my opinion.

Daniel, you have my email address - drop me a line if you wish.

    Daniel,

You’re a Valencianista too? You’re like the only other person in Australia I have known of that supports Valencia. Haha, awesome.

    .. loyal talent as well.

I definitely won’t disagree with you on that comment, Villa has been ridiculously loyal even after all those transfer rumours and offers.

And Rory, I can’t agree with you more. Far too many bandwagoners who couldn’t give two shits about the local football in Australia and won’t even sacrifice $10-20 to go to a match, while they will spend $55 a month minimum to watch the premier league etc on Foxtel.

Just to throw in my two cents: I largely agree that the low level of support for the A-league is disappointing. I think things can be a little different for people who haven’t grown up with football, though.

I grew up in a family with no interest in sport whatever, and only really started watching football at the World Cup. Naturally, I fell in love with the Roos. It was a journey from there to club football, though, and being as I didn’t have a whole lot of money I mostly watched SBS. Living in Perth I attended a Glory game, against the New Zealand Knights, a team even Perth with Stuart Young up front could beat. It wasn’t very good, and at the time I couldn’t afford to do it regularly. Now I live in rural Tasmania and have even less opportunity to attend matches, but I still (loosely) support the Glory and still catch all the football on free TV.

Along the way I somehow became a diehard Lyon supporter (I think it was the Trophée des Championes match I watched; beautiful football) but even there I can’t stake a claim to the “your club, your support” kind of thing Rory mentioned above. But on the other hand I don’t think I’m a “****ing Euro-snob”.

I’m not saying all this to argue that there aren’t people who could attend A-league matches and don’t, and that it wouldn’t be great if they do. (Heaven knows there’s a big enough population in Sydney and Melbourne.) I just think there are other points of view sometimes.

I must say i was all for a new league 3yrs ago and was so positive . 3 years on and unfortunately my interest has died with the HAL. WHY? its simple, the standard is terrible. lets face it if these players were any good they would be playing in europe. they only play here coz they cant play anywhere else. atleast if i saw top quality foreigners and not brazilian painters acting like soccer players and no washed up ex socceroo maybe the standard would be better. this league is already nearing its use by date and thats a pity
