Weekly Wrap (17/7)
By: Kieran | July 16th, 2009Well well well…Firstly I would like to say, it was great to come back from warm Queensland to find heaps of articles from club bloggers. So good work guys
However this was all darkened by the fact I went from at midday wake up in warmth to an 8 o’clock wake up in freezing cold Canberra
which sucked…alot. But onto the A-League…
Friendlies
There have been heaps of friendlies over the last two weeks, some of which have already been covered by the other bloggers. I don’t want to focus on them in the Weekly Wrap, so tomorrow I’ll be doing a special Friendly Wrap.

Swine Flu 2 – A League 0
Swine Flu has hit the A League with two quick fire goals, with Gold Coast and Adelaide both suffering at its hands. According to SBS, Gold Coast player Tahj Minniecon has been confirmed as infected with the H1N1 virus, while 4 others, Adam Griffiths, Joel Porter, Matt Osman and Daniel Piorkowski, have all been put in home quarantine, awaiting the outcome of the tests. This will be a major blow for the new team, but if they recover in time for the new season it may not be as bad as first feared. Meanwhile Adelaide United have also been hit by Swine Flu, with new signing Lloyd Owusu reportedly struck down by Swine Flu and Pneumonia. This is a big blow for the Adelaide club, as Owusu is one of their main signings. Well lets hope the A League bounces back with a quick hat trick, and we get the best season yet.
And you thought Vidmar’s outburst was bad…
Adelaide United manager has claimed that it is unlikely his side will have a marquee signing this season. In an interview with Sportal he said
“At this stage we don’t have a marquee and we probably won’t get a marquee…They are all the little issues we have so we’ll have to make do with the best person available…It’s just a name, a title – marquee player – what does it mean? – nothing…Our marquee last year [Paul Agostino] didn’t play so is it such a big deal? No. We’d like to have another person as a marquee player absolutely but at this point it’s difficult.”
Yer, he’s gone crazy. While some claim that this isn’t actually going to be so bad, I think Adelaide will crash and burn this season, as you’ll find out in my A League Season Preview coming soon.
NQF have landed young Socceroo striker David Williams
North Queensland Fury have confirmed the signing of young Socceroo David Williams, on a one year loan from Danish club FC Brondby. The 21 year old striker signs on as the Fury’s marquee under-21 player. Williams also has A League expierence, having previously played for Brisbane Roar. NQ Fury manager Ian Ferguson said he was happy to have signed the 21 year old,
“David is an exciting prospect for the Fury. He brings goal-scoring ability and speed to the squad…David has got a great reputation even at his young age and being an under-21 player hopefully he’ll continue to develop as a player…It’s great to have a young player of his talent in the squad.”
News in Short:
Lote Tuqiri to be charging down the wing in the A League???
Wellington looking to Asia
Vidmar doesn’t think signing a unknown on his first pro contract is a gamble
Canberra gets A League football…and maybe soon a team
Well that’ll be all for today, look out for a wrap of the friendlies tomorrow, and remember, if you have something to say, comment!
