POLL: What Was The Right Punishment From Brosques Disallowed Goal
By: Marcus | October 21st, 2009The match was in its dying stages. Sydney were a trailing Adelaide United 2-1 and were pushing forward. United keeper Eugene Galekovic pushed forward and collected the ball to prevent Sydney from even having a sniff of an equalizer.
Galekovic held the ball, waited til the players in the box cleared out (or so he thought) and proceeded to kick the ball out of danger. But before he released the ball to his boot Alex Brosque headed the ball out of the keepers hand and kicked it into the goal to the shock of everyone in the stadium and viewers. Referee Strebre Delovski called the ball back and awarded a free kick and gave Brosque a yellow.
When I saw this live I was a bit stunned as I had never seen it before. I was happy that Strebre called the ball back but i started thinking, was that only worthy of yellow? I personally thought Brosque should have received his marching orders as he committed several bookable offenses, as well of dispossessing the keeper while he had full control of the ball. Don’t get me wrong if the keeper was juggling it or didn’t have control of the ball fair game, but he was doing his routine clearance and he hadn’t gone over the 5-6 second period that keepers are allowed to hold onto the ball.
The offenses that Brosque commented are:
1. Heading the ball out of the keepers hands.
2. Kicking the ball into the net when the whistle went.
3. Back chatting the Ref after his card.
4. If Adelaide had of done it, it could have been construed as time wasting.
5. Its Alex Brosque that is enough said, he deserves a straight red
I wanted to get a poll going to get everyone else’s thoughts on this incident as I have spoken to a few people who have all had different thoughts on the issue.

To give my opinion on your four points, with the fifth being a given.
1. Yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct. Keeper had full control and trying to score like that is simply cheating.
2. Whistle and subsequent kick were fairly close together. Be harsh to card him for that.
3. Every player tries to protest a card. It’s up to the ref to decide whether he’s crossed a line.
4. Yes it could be seen as time wasting if Adelaide committed the same offence but no referee is going to red card someone for that alone. Kick the keeper to do it and you might see a red but it would be very harsh otherwise.Posted from

I’m not interested in the rules, shouldn’t be a red card offence. Simply doesn’t warrant it.
Don’t forget the rule is the GK must have TWO hands on the ball for a player not to challenge. But when a GK takes a kick it seems those rules don’t apply, which is fair enough.
Full credit, to Brosque for having a crack at it, cos some ref (especially in the A-League) may have paid that. But Yellow at most.

It should have been a goal.

In all seriousness I think a yellow card is a fair punishment.Posted from

Stupid play by Brosque, a yellow at least for interference. It was a childish move, something you’d do in a schoolyard game.
I’d say it was a waste of time if anything.Posted from
