Bastards…

Football Federation Australia have today announced that the 12th A-League license will go to a Western Sydney bid. Bastards…

Hope you like my Photoshop skills.

But yes, today the FFA have announced that a Western Sydney team will be joining the A League in 2011, giving them an extra year to get ready, and meaning next year there will be byes during season. While it did look inevitable, I’m pretty pissed off they didn’t give it to Canberra. Canberra showed at the Qatar game, and through the people who pledged money to a club, that they had the support. But the FFA used a 5,000 crowd as an excuse not to give it to us, yet the same weekend, the two form teams Gold Coast and Sydney played in Gold Coast and only got 6,500. The Gold Coast has a larger population then Canberra, and Sydney has many travelling fans. On the other hand the Canberra game was between Perth and Central Coast, two teams without much local support. But does Billy big shot Buckley whine about GCU’s crowd numbers? No he doesn’t, he instead uses it as an excuse to discredit Canberra’s bid. Bloody FFA!

I just don’t see why Sydney deserve a second team over Canberra. Canberra had more community support, but because the FFA are so bias, they still give it to West Sydney. A while ago I saw a comment on 442 saying they should give it to WS because we need more derbies? More derbies? Isn’t Melbourne v Sydney, all three Queensland derbies, the F3 derby, Adelaide v Melbourne etc etc etc enough?

The Western Sydney bid will be led by Saatchi & Saatchi executive chairman and former Young Socceroo Ian Rowden, and has support of lawyer Peter Tredinnick, former footballer John Moore and notable businessman Charlie Yankos.

Buckley said today that,

It is a traditional heartland for football, having produced a large number of very talented men and women players…We believe they are the right people to build and establish the team and to connect to football fans and the wider community and we want to give the team every chance to succeed by giving them time to put all the right building blocks in place.

He also tried to pacify me (and other Canberrans) by adding that Canberra would be an “an obvious priority” for the 13th license, and that “We will be working with the ACT Government and the Canberra consortium to achieve this in an appropriate timeframe.”

Well that nice, but will you still have the support of Canberra after screwing us over once when you come back to screw us over again?

Well, more ranting will follow tomorrow guys, plus a review of the weekends action, and some other A League news (The new rich kids are looking at signing Kanu on a guest stint). So stay tuned. Goodnight.

Hahaha. Even though I am from WS, I’m pretty indifferent to this news. In my opinion, 12 teams still isn’t enough. Canberra will have a team in the not-too-distant future, have patience. Think about it, the FFA is being reactive to the AFL’s invasion into soccer territory in WS, they were compelled to act. With Canberra, though, there isn’t a rush, which may suck for you guys (by the way, my commiserations) but it’s a harsh reality.

The A-League has been pretty rubbish this season though so you aren’t missing out on that much anyway…

And another thing – and I know this is teasing you more than anything, but how long would it take to get to a WS game from Canberra? About a 2hr drive? :) It takes me 1.5 hours just to drive to the SFS.

Personally Kieran, I think rapid expansion is one of the 1st poor decisions by the FFA. It’s a bit of a worry for me.

The idea of expansion is to expand football’s territory and market, yet they’ve expanded into Melbourne? where there’s already a team? You can make a case for West Sydney, as Sydney works different to Melbourne like that.

So in saying that, I’d like to see a Canberra team. BUT I oppose expansion and believe it’s too soon and too reckless by the FFA. I fear the path they’re treading down.

The standard of the football is key, and too many teams equals diluting the talent pool. You can already see it with NQF.

Yer Ben in a way I agree. This season has already demonstrated that rapid expansion is bad, but yet FFA want to still expand. I think the league can survive with 12 teams, but any more at the current time is to much. So to give those last two teams to cities already with teams (in a way reducing crowds for their competeting team (so MVFC and Sydney) is stupid.

I think the FFA should have expanded to 12, giving a team to Canberra and one to South Coast, and then stop expanding for a while. Someone in Melbourne can already support a team, and adding another team is only going to add a few fans who can’t be stuffed driving to a stadium a bit further away. Same with someone in Sydney. Even someone in Western Sydney can get to a Syd FC game in only 45 mins or so, whereas the nearest team to Canberra is 4 hours away. So why not give the team to Canberra?

To be fair to Buckley and co, they have made some good decisions so far. But this decision is bloody annoying.
