A-League Season Preview Part 1

Hi everyone, here is the first part of the A League season 2009/10 preview. I am going to be doing two previews, the first a general preview of the new season, featuring quotes from Marcus, Ahmed and I, from a MSN conversation last night. And then over the next week I’ll be writing a team by team season preview. So… let the new season roll…

Who’s going to win the new season

This season may very well turn into the tightest season ever, with Gold Coast, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Sydney all looking like they could all be in the running.

Ahmed: Well I think the Roar definitely have it in them…they have a good squad and have come close on 2 occasions, its a case of finishing it off. (Kieran’s note: Ahmed is a Roar supporter, so… ) I think Melbourne can win it, but they too slow at the back. GCU definitely have a squad, but their coach is not very good.
Marcus: My top 4…Melbourne ,Brisbane, Perth and I’m gonna say Newcastle.
Ahmed: Ill go Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Central Coast Mariners.
Kieran: Well I think top 4 will be Melbourne, Sydney, Gold Coast and Perth.

Is Aloisi gonna go well?

John Aloisi’s form could make or break Sydney FC this season, and after a horrible last season he will be looking to make amends. So is he gonna shoot and score, or put it into the stands,
Ahmed: Don’t think so…he’s off the pace and lost a lot of what he had, against a tougher team he’ll struggle.
Marcus: He’s not as good as he was, last year he was terrible to say the least. Missing a sitter that Kuranyi would put in….thats saying something.
Kieran: Well I dunno, he looked ok against the Fury, if he stays fit he could be really good, but thats a big if…

Bottom 4
So who’s going to be making up the numbers.
Ahmed: erm, im going Newcastle last, then Wellington, Adelaide and Sydney
Marcus: Wellington last, CCM, Adelaide and north Queensland.
Kieran: Hard to pick, maybe Wellington, Mariners, North Queensland and Central Coast.

A Canberra A League team

Well you know I had to put this in, is Canberra gonna get a team.
Marcus: I reckon the west Sydney or Canberra and I think Canberra deserve the licence more.
Ahmed: They showed in that Asia cup qualifier match the support they can offer. Canberra definitely deserve it more than a 2nd Melbourne team.
Marcus: I don’t think there needs to be another Melbourne team.
Ahmed: We need to expand not create more derbies right now…
Marcus:I think west Sydney will get one before Canberra because they wanna get a team in there before the AFL.
Ahmed: expand to Canberra first then go 2nd Melbourne…AFL can only expand so much though, it doesnt have a huge production line like football..football can look overseas, AFL not soo much, its all whatever is here in Australia…and they cant keep taking nrl stars.
Kieran: CANBERRA CANBERRA CANBERRA!!!

Gold Coast United:


How’s the new glamour team gonna go?
Ahmed: They definitely wont go undefeated.
Marcus: I don’t think they will beat the Roar tbh.
Ahmed: I was happy when he said boycotting..if he and miron want to act like idiots, thats fine by me, they don’t have to come to suncorp, we don’t want them there.
Kieran: Well I think looking at there squad its obvious they will go well, but I don’t think they’ll win. Maybe semis, but no better…

Golden Boot Winner:

Who’s gonna score the most this year…
Ahmed:tough one, if fowler gets good service, no beating him.
Marcus: Smeltz.
Ahmed: otherwise maybe Smeltz.
Kieran: Well I thought Simon played pretty well yesterday but id go Smeltz as well,with Culina and Porter etc he’ll be getting great service.

Best Signing of the off season

Ahmed: Best is Fowler, worst….tough to say.
Marcus: Agree with Ahmed, Fowler. (Worst) I reckon Rudan to Adelaide maybe.
Kieran: Idk.. I think in terms of name its Fowler but best in playing terms I think could be Sterj.

FFA Young Player of the Year

Marcus: Who do u reckon will be the young player of the year…shut up Kieran.
Kieran: Lol dammit you’ve pre-empted me…but I wasn’t actually gonna say Kofi (Danning, aka KOFI KOFI KOFI!!!)…Daniel Williams could be good.
Ahmed: I don’t know much of the other teams, but this lad here in Brisbane, Adam Sarota looks good.
Kieran: Or maybe Tahj (he still eligible for young player of year???)

Should the FFA try to bring the SuperCoppa Down Under

Marcus: Do you reckon the FFA should try and bring the Supercoppa from Italy down under? Last year it was in USA, this year its in China.
Kieran: Definitely, it was Inter Lazio this year eh? I mean thats massive.
Marcus: Yea all the Inter fans and Lazio fans and all the anti Nazis (Marcus is a Roma fan)…would be massive.

Who’s going to win the Title?

Ahmed: Roar.
Marcus: Melbourne.
(No surprises from those two)
Kieran: I’m thinking Perth.

To win the Ashes:

Ahmed: Hahahah, im going for England, cant stand Australia…their arrogance, its a thing from when I lived in Zimbabwe wont go in to it.
Kieran:Aussie all the way.
Marcus: Aussie, cause im born and bred.

And finally…

Ahmed: Damnit, Brisbane already got 3 yellow cards…these gold coast players are weak…they’ve been fouls, but still…its against GCU, they don’t count.
Marcus: I reckon the FFA should allow weapons onto the field. (Definitely Quote of the Week)
